December 18, 2010: Version 1.2.4 Released

  • When using a virtual keyboard to edit foods items, scrolling to the last items now works properly.
Other changes:
  • The demo version no longer expires.
  • The free version no longer displays ads.

  • The bug report and survey menu items have been removed.

December 14, 2010: CalorieQuick to be discontinued
From John Van Roekel, developer of CalorieQuick.

I am sorry to announce that CalorieQuick is being discontinued. Unfortunately, the income generated by sales of the paid version and from the ads in the free version is not sufficient to cover ongoing costs.

If you are an active CalorieQuick user, I'm sure you have questions. I'll try to answer some of them now.

Can I continue to use CalorieQuick?
Yes, it will continue to run indefinitely.

Will there be any more updates?
There will be a single update to all three versions (demo, free and paid) around Dec 19. It will fix some small bugs.

I installed the demo version. What do I do when the demo period ends?
If the demo period ends before the final update (around Dec 19), you should upgrade to the free version. Otherwise, you should wait for the update in which the demo period restriction will be removed, and you can continue to run the demo version indefinitely.

I'm using the free version. What should I do?
Continue using the current version. After you install the update, the ads will disappear.

I purchased the paid version. What should I do?
Continue using the current version and install the update.

What will happen to the Shared Food Database on the CalorieQuick server?
It will continue to operate for now. If it becomes unavailable in the future, you can use the Developer Tools screen to turn off access to the database.

Will the new Weight Watchers Points Plus program be supported?
No.

I cannot find the demo and paid versions on Android Market. Does this mean they won't be updated?
No, they are there, but are no longer visible. Only the free version will be visible and that will end on December 31.

I sincerely regret the necessity of this action. I hope that those of you who have used CalorieQuick have gotten some benefit and, in the end, that was my primary goal. And thank you to all of you who have provided feedback, particularly the beta test participants.

Best of luck with your eating and your exercise,
John

November 26, 2010: Version 1.2.3 Released
Changes:
  • While the Exercise Timer is running, the Back key and Search key are disabled to avoid accidentally stopping the timer.
  • Once each day, all versions of CalorieQuick report version information to the CalorieQuick server. This allows the tracking of the number of version types in active use. No user-specific information is included.
  • Once each day, the paid versions of CalorieQuick contact Android Market and verify that the user has a valid software license. For now, a warning message is displayed if a valid license is not found. In the future, CalorieQuick will stop working. If you see a message indicating you do not have a valid license, send an email to "help@caloriequick.com". For more information, please see the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
  • The CalorieQuick Privacy Policy has been updated to describe version reporting and license validation.
Bug fixes:
  • When editing an exercise directly from the built-in exercise database, the "Calories/min" and "Points/min" values were not filled in.

November 14, 2010: Version 1.2.2 Fixes Bugs
Version 1.2.2 has been released and it fixes the following bugs:
  • Exercise editing did not allow negative values to be entered, resulting in positive calorie counts. Now, positive values are entered/edited for exercise calories and points, but the the net value displayed and used is negative.
  • When using a virtual keyboard for editing foods or exercises, the wrong keyboard might be initially selected. (E.g. when editing a bar code, the keyboard did not initially show numbers.)
  • When loading a backup after a re-install, the data might only be partially loaded and the summary dialog would disappear.
  • When editing a food or exercise and the phone was rotated (this is called an orientation change), values entered so far would be lost.

November 7, 2010: Daylight Savings Time Bug Fixed in Version 1.2.1
The bug described below has been fixed in version 1.2.1 in all three versions (paid, demo and free). The update is available on Android Market now.
November 7, 2010: Daylight Savings Time Bug
CalorieQuick has a bug related to the change in Daylight Savings Time. Users in the United States are noticing that if you add a food or exercise, it is not showing up in your day list.

The problem will only occur on November 7. On Monday, November 8, things will be back to normal.

The feasibility of releasing an update to address this problem is being investigated.
October 31, 2010: CalorieQuick Version 1.2 Released
Changes in version 1.2:
  • FatSecret™ support has been removed. For more information, see the news item for October 24 below.
  • Users can easily share foods, including UPC bar codes, with other users using the new online CalorieQuick shared foods database.
  • Food searches have changed significantly:
    • Food searches now search the CalorieQuick shared food database in addition to the user's own data and the built-in USDA database.
    • UPC bar code searches now search user foods, which can contain bar codes.
    • UPC bar code searches search the CalorieQuick shared food database.
  • All data for any food or exercise can now be edited at any time, including making it a Favorite.
Bugs fixed:
  • In some circumstances, it was possible to delete the current user in the "Edit Users" screen.

October 24, 2010: FatSecret Support to End on October 31
Unfortunately, FatSecret and CalorieQuick.com have not been able to negotiate a contract that allows CalorieQuick to continue accessing the online FatSecret food database. As a result, the connection to the FatSecret web service will be shut down on October 31. (Note that this possibility is covered by paragraph 13 of the CalorieQuick End User Agreement which all users agree to when initially installing CalorieQuick.)

As a result of this change, effective immediately, the price for the paid version of CalorieQuick has been cut from $2.99 to $1.99.

The removal of FatSecret support does not mean that the bar code scanning feature is useless. See the new bar code features in the new version below.

Users of the current version (1.1) will see an error message when they enter search text. To disable FatSecret searches, see these instructions. CalorieQuick will continue to search the built-in FDA database.

A new version of CalorieQuick will be released prior to October 31. In addition to removing FatSecret support, it will have the following new features.
  • All food nutrition values may be entered. Now you can enter Fat from Calories, Total Fat, Vitamin A, etc.
  • All foods and exercises may be fully edited at any time.
  • For foods, UPC bar code values may be entered.
  • Foods with a UPC bar code, calorie and point values may be shared with other CalorieQuick users.
  • When scanning a UPC bar code, CalorieQuick will search your own foods for the bar code and, if it is not found, search the foods shared by other users.
John Van Roekel, the developer of CalorieQuick and a daily user, understands the impact this will have on CalorieQuick users and regrets that this change is necessary.
October 10, 2010: CalorieQuick Price Cut from $4.99 to $2.99
The price of the paid version of CalorieQuick has been decreased from $4.99 to $2.99 effective immediately.
October 7, 2010: CalorieQuick Free Version Released
In addition to the free 14 day demo and the paid versions, "CalorieQuick Free" is now available for download from Android Market (search for "CalorieQuick"). Like the demo version, this version is free. However it does not expire. Instead, it displays small, targeted advertisements at the bottom of the home screen. In all other respects, it has the same functionality as the paid version.
October 3, 2010: CalorieQuick 1.1 Released

  • Support for wide ("landscape") oriented screens and slide-out keyboards.
